Notion AIvs
ChatGPT

This is not really a comparison of models. It is a question of what the assistant can see. Notion AI reads your workspace; ChatGPT does not, but does nearly everything else better. If your company runs on Notion, that asymmetry is the whole decision.

- Both is common, and comes to roughly $30–45 per person per month

Who wins what
Teams running on Notion
Notion AI
It uses the documents and databases you already have as context, which makes its answers far better than anything you get by pasting into a chat window.
General-purpose AI
ChatGPT
Code, images, voice and web search — none of which Notion AI attempts.
Drafting and structuring articles
ChatGPT
Better at the back-and-forth of drafting, editing and rewriting at length.
Internal knowledge questions

Questions like who owns this project, or what was decided last week, get answered directly from your own content.
Strengths and trade-offs
Notion AI
Strengths
- Uses your Notion documents as context natively
- Writing, summarising and formatting happen in the page
- Workspace-wide Q&A answers from internal knowledge
- Stated publicly as excluded from training
- Zero friction for existing Notion users
Trade-offs
- Pointless if your team does not use Notion
- Must be purchased for every seat
- Behind ChatGPT on general conversation and code
- No image generation, voice or web search
ChatGPT
Strengths
- Covers conversation, code, images, voice and search
- API available for custom integration
- GPTs and plugin ecosystem
- Several plan tiers for individuals and teams
Trade-offs
- Cannot see internal context natively
- Connecting it to Notion means copy-paste or custom work
- Individual Plus trains on conversations by default
- Internal knowledge Q&A has to be built separately
What it costs
If you already pay for Notion, adding AI is $10 per seat. ChatGPT Plus is $20. Running both lands around $30 per person — which is what many teams conclude is correct, because they do different jobs.

Questions we get
- Can ChatGPT read my Notion pages?
- Not natively. You can paste content in, or build a connection yourself, but neither is the same as Notion AI having the workspace as context by default.
- Does Notion AI have to be bought for everyone?
- Yes — it is priced per seat across the workspace, which is the single biggest objection teams raise.
- Is Notion AI enough on its own?
- Only if your work is reading and writing documents. The moment code, images or web research enter the picture, you will want a general assistant alongside it.
