Claude

Both are $20 a month and both are good. The split is consistent: ChatGPT is the better generalist, Claude is better at reading something long and writing something that holds its tone. If your work is mostly code, documents and careful writing, that difference is worth more than the feature count.

Who wins what

Code and development

Claude

200K context means a whole repository can be the input, and its follow-through on refactors is the strongest of the two.

Creative work and images

ChatGPT

Native image generation. Claude has none at all.

Research and summarising

Claude

Papers, meeting logs and PDFs can go in together and come back as one structured summary.

Voice conversation

ChatGPT

Advanced Voice Mode is in a class of its own for natural spoken interaction.

Shared team templates

ChatGPT

The GPTs store makes packaged assistants easy to build and circulate.

Written Japanese

Claude

Consistent polite form and better handling of proper nouns across a long document.

Strengths and trade-offs

ChatGPT

Strengths

  • Native image generation
  • Advanced Voice Mode for natural spoken conversation
  • GPTs store with a large library of packaged assistants
  • Code Interpreter and Files for data work
  • ChatGPT Search for current information

Trade-offs

  • Individual Plus uses conversations for training unless you turn it off
  • Context window on Plus is well short of Claude's 200K
  • Message limits differ by model and are hard to track
  • Slightly behind Claude on code
  • Tone drifts on long Japanese text

Claude

Strengths

  • 200K-token context window
  • Strongest follow-through on code and refactors
  • Holds a written register across long documents
  • Artifacts previews generated output inline
  • Does not train on your conversations by default, even on individual plans

Trade-offs

  • No native image generation or voice
  • No equivalent to the GPTs ecosystem
  • Web search coverage trails ChatGPT
  • Usage limits reset on a rolling window that can interrupt a long session
  • Fewer third-party integrations

What it costs

Both are $20 a month for individuals, so buying both is $40 — a realistic answer for anyone whose work spans code and creative output. If usage goes up, ChatGPT Pro and Claude Max are the next steps.

Questions we get

Which is better at Japanese?
Claude for written documents that must hold a consistent register. ChatGPT often reads more naturally in colloquial Japanese and knows more proper nouns. Teams that care about both usually keep both.
Is my data used for training?
On ChatGPT Plus, yes by default — you have to turn it off in Data Controls. Claude does not train on your conversations by default, including on individual plans.
Do I need the more expensive tiers?
Only if you hit the limits. ChatGPT Pro at $200 and Claude Max make sense when reasoning models are part of your daily work, not before.
