AI agent and automation platforms in 2026
Tools that 'build AI agents' split into three groups: platforms for LLM apps, platforms for connecting SaaS, and assistants that stay resident. Ranked so you can work backwards from what you want to exist, with billing units and self-hosting as the main axes.

How we ranked these
Stated before the list, so you can disagree with the weighting rather than the result.
The ranking
- 01

n8n4.6€20/mo〜
Node-based workflow automation for AI agents and back-office processes — and the rare one you can self-host.
Choose n8n when self-hosting matters or when workflows need real branching and code. If neither is true, Zapier will be quicker to live.
- 02

Zapier4.5From $19.99/mo
The automation default, connecting 8,000+ SaaS apps. Its agent features start on the free tier.
The right first choice for most teams. Revisit it when either the monthly task count or the security review starts to hurt.
- 03

Dify4.5Free
Build and ship LLM apps and RAG pipelines from a GUI. The open-source edition runs on your own infrastructure.
The quickest route to a working internal RAG assistant, especially where data residency rules out hosted tools.
- 04

Lindy4.3$49.99/mo
No-code AI assistants that sit on your inbox, meetings and CRM and keep working without prompting.
Worth a trial if inbox and meeting admin is eating hours. Check the data access question before rolling it out to a team.
- 05

Vapi4.2従量課金
Infrastructure for voice AI agents that answer the phone, billed by the minute.
The right foundation for a phone-answering agent. Budget the pilot for tuning latency, and settle the consent question first.
- 06

Sierra4.3Contact sales
Customer-facing AI agents across chat, SMS, voice and email, priced on resolved outcomes.
Worth a conversation when ticket volume is high and the knowledge base is in good shape. Below that, it is the wrong size of tool.
Questions we get
- Is n8n or Zapier cheaper?
- It inverts with flow complexity. n8n counts one workflow run as one unit; Zapier counts each step as one task. A five-step flow costs Zapier five times as much per run. Simple integrations at low volume favour Zapier; branching and looping favour n8n.
- When should we self-host?
- Two cases: the data cannot pass through an external cloud, or run volume makes usage pricing expensive. Choosing it because it is free, when neither applies, costs more in upgrades, backups and incident response than the subscription would.
- How do Dify and n8n differ?
- Dify is for chatbots and RAG over internal documents, where the model is the centre of the work. n8n is workflow automation where the model is one node. Roughly: 70% model, use Dify; 20% model, use n8n.
- Is model usage billed separately?
- With n8n, yes — you bring your own API key. Dify and Lindy consume credits included in the plan. Vapi bills the model on top of hosting, per minute.
