Perplexity Pro vs ChatGPT Plus search — paying twice for research?
ChatGPT Plus includes web search. Perplexity Pro costs the same again and does only research. The question is whether sourcing rigour is worth a second subscription, and for most people the honest answer is no.

The one thing that decides it
Does anyone check your sources? If your research ends up in something audited, cited, published or argued over, Perplexity's citation handling earns its price. If you are looking things up to inform your own thinking, ChatGPT Search is sufficient and you already have it.
Where Perplexity is better
- Citations are inline and attached to specific claims rather than listed at the end
- Spaces keep a line of inquiry organised across sessions
- Following a claim back to its source is one click rather than a search
- Model switching, so you can compare how different models read the same sources
Where ChatGPT is better
- Everything after the research — drafting, restructuring, holding a tone
- Mixed workflows where search is one step among several
- Images, code and data analysis in the same conversation
The practical recommendation
Start with ChatGPT Plus. If you find yourself repeatedly wishing you could see exactly where a claim came from, add Perplexity. That is a real signal; buying it in advance usually is not.
Is Perplexity more accurate?
It is more verifiable, which is not the same thing. Both can misread a source; Perplexity makes it faster to notice.
What about Claude for research?
Claude's web access is limited, so it is the wrong tool for finding current information and the right one for reasoning over what you found.
