Perplexity vs ChatGPT Search — which one for research you have to defend?
Since ChatGPT gained search, the obvious question is whether a dedicated answer engine still earns a separate subscription. For most people it does not. For people whose work gets checked, it does.

The short version
- Research that will be cited, audited or challenged → Perplexity
- Occasional current-information questions inside a workflow → ChatGPT Search is enough
- Both, if research is most of your job and writing is the other half
What separates them
Perplexity is built so the sources are the output, not a footnote. Citations appear inline, you can see what each claim rests on, and Spaces keep a line of research organised over time. ChatGPT Search cites too, but the experience is optimised for answering rather than for showing its work.
The practical test: when you need to go back three weeks later and establish where a number came from, Perplexity makes that straightforward and ChatGPT makes it a search through your own history.
Cost
Both are $20 a month. If you already pay for ChatGPT Plus, the real question is whether research is frequent enough to justify a second subscription — which for consultants, analysts and journalists it usually is, and for most other roles it is not.
Which handles Japanese sources better?
Both reach Japanese sources; neither is reliably better. For anything where the Japanese source matters legally or financially, open the source itself rather than trusting either summary.
Can Perplexity replace ChatGPT entirely?
No. It is weaker at sustained writing and at holding a tone, which is why the common pattern is research in Perplexity and drafting elsewhere.
