Why pick a domestic AI vendor when the model is the same
If you cannot articulate these, the procurement conversation stalls on price.

Start by conceding the model point
Many domestic vendors are built on OpenAI or Anthropic models. A capability argument does not hold. Everything that matters is around the edges.
The real criteria
| Criterion | Where it matters |
|---|---|
| Local-language contract, local governing law and venue | Organisations with strict legal review |
| Support in local language and business hours | Small IT teams |
| Vendor owns regulatory compliance | Regulated processes |
| Invoice billing and annual contracts | Organisations where cards do not clear |
| Domestic reference customers | Material for the approval paper |
| Features shaped around local business practice | Approval flows and statutory forms |
Invoice billing is underrated and decisive
Most global SaaS assumes a card. Where that does not clear, the contract cannot happen at all. This never comes up in the technical evaluation and stops deals at the final stage, so check with finance early.
When not to choose domestic
- You want new model features on release day
- You share tooling with English-speaking teams
- You have engineers and prefer the flexibility
- Cost dominates and governance requirements are light
The first is the one teams miss. A wrapper means new provider features arrive when the wrapper supports them, sometimes months later.
FAQ
Should we verify data residency?
If you have a requirement, verify it down to the region where inference runs. A domestic vendor can still be inferring abroad.
