ChatGPT Enterprise vs Team — which one does your company actually need?
Most companies that think they need Enterprise can start on Team, and most that start on Team discover within a quarter whether they need Enterprise. Here is the dividing line.

The dividing line
| Requirement | Team | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|
| Training exclusion | Yes | Yes |
| SSO | Limited | SAML SSO |
| SCIM provisioning | No | Yes |
| Audit logs | Limited | Yes |
| Data residency options | No | Available |
| Admin controls | Basic | Full |
| Price | $25/seat | Quoted |
| Time to start | Immediately | Procurement cycle |
If you need SCIM, exportable audit logs or data residency, you need Enterprise and no amount of wishing changes that. If you do not, Team gives you training exclusion and shared workspaces for a fraction of the effort.
The practical sequence
- Start thirty people on Team for a month, with a written policy
- Measure usage and the specific tasks it is used for
- If adoption is real and the compliance requirements bite, move to Enterprise with evidence
- If adoption is thin, you saved yourself a procurement cycle
In Japan specifically
Team is card-billed, which some Japanese companies cannot process at all. If invoice payment in yen is required, that alone can push you to Enterprise or to a reseller, independent of feature requirements. Establish it before planning the pilot.
Does Team train on our data?
No. Business plans including Team exclude your content from training. That is the main reason to move people off individual Plus accounts.
Is there a seat minimum on Enterprise?
Yes, and it is high enough to rule it out for many mid-size companies. That is the most common reason companies stay on Team longer than they planned.
