What it is good for

  • Organisations already running Sourcegraph
  • Codebases spread across many repositories

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Code Search integration gives genuine cross-repository context
  • From $9/mo; Cody Enterprise contextualises an entire codebase
  • SOC 2 Type II certified

Trade-offs

  • Single-file completion quality is on par with Cursor and Copilot, not ahead
  • Little reason to adopt it without Sourcegraph

Editors' review

Sourcegraph's coding assistant — context that spans repositories

Cody is built on top of Sourcegraph's Code Search engine, so its strength is understanding context across a whole repository or across several repositories at once.

Pricing starts at $9/mo, and Cody Enterprise can take an entire codebase as context. SOC 2 Type II is in place.

For one-off completion it is level with Cursor and Copilot. The case for it is the Sourcegraph strength underneath; without that, the other two are simpler.

Verdict

A natural extension for organisations already on Sourcegraph. Starting fresh, evaluate Cursor or Copilot first.
