by Anthropic4.7

Claude Code puts the agent in your terminal instead of your editor. It edits across files, runs tests and drives git on its own — a Composer-like experience that does not care which editor you use.

What it is good for

  • Developers who already live in the terminal
  • JetBrains, Vim and Neovim users who cannot switch to a VS Code fork
  • Existing Claude Pro or Max subscribers — no extra cost
  • Tasks that involve running tests and committing, not just writing code

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Editor-independent: works wherever you have a shell
  • Included in Claude Pro and Max, so no separate subscription
  • Executes multi-file edits, test runs and git operations autonomously

Trade-offs

  • Assumes comfort with the command line
  • Premium model usage is capped
  • No GUI affordances — Cursor or Copilot feel nicer out of the box

Editors' review

A Claude agent in your terminal — implementation help without picking an editor

Claude Code is Anthropic's CLI coding agent. In the terminal it will edit multiple files, run the test suite and handle git, which gets you close to Cursor's Composer experience without adopting Cursor's editor.

It is included in Claude Pro and Max, so existing subscribers pay nothing extra. And because it is editor-independent, it reaches the JetBrains, Vim and Neovim users that a VS Code fork structurally cannot.

The trade-offs are the command line itself and the cap on premium model usage. If you want a polished GUI experience, Cursor and Copilot feel better from the first minute.

Verdict

The first choice for terminal-native engineers who already pay for Claude Pro — and the realistic Cursor alternative for CLI and JetBrains users.
