ChatGPT vs Gemini — has Google caught up?
Comparing these two on benchmark scores misses the point. Gemini's case is that it already has access to your email, documents and calendar. Whether that beats ChatGPT's breadth depends entirely on whether your company runs on Google Workspace.

The short version
- Company runs on Google Workspace → Gemini, for the integration alone
- You want the widest capability and the GPTs ecosystem → ChatGPT
- You need a generous free tier to start with → Gemini
- Japanese writing quality is the priority → neither; look at Claude
Where Gemini wins
Workspace integration is not a feature list item, it is the product. Gemini can work on the document you are in, the thread you are reading and the meeting on your calendar without you pasting anything. For an organisation already standardised on Google, the rollout friction is close to zero and the security questions are answered by an existing contract.
The free tier is also materially better than ChatGPT's, which makes Gemini the easiest entry point for someone who has not used an assistant before.
Where ChatGPT wins
- Native image generation and voice, both mature
- The GPTs store, with no equivalent on the Gemini side
- Code Interpreter for data work
- A broader third-party integration ecosystem
Japanese output
Gemini is usable and trails ChatGPT slightly on holding a consistent written register, and both trail Claude. If Japanese business writing is the main use, this comparison is the wrong one.
Is Gemini's context window really millions of tokens?
Yes, and it is genuinely useful for large inputs. In practice, quality over very long contexts varies by task, so test with your own material rather than assuming the number translates directly.
Which is cheaper for a company?
Gemini, if you already pay for Workspace, because it is an add-on rather than a separate contract. Otherwise they are close enough that integration should decide it.
