ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro — which $20 subscription should you buy?
Two subscriptions, twenty dollars each, and the marketing pages will not help you choose. The difference reduces to a single question: is your work mostly producing long careful text and code, or is it mostly everything else?

The privacy default people miss
On individual ChatGPT Plus, conversations are used for training unless you turn that off in Data Controls. Claude does not do this by default, even on individual plans. If you paste work content into a personal subscription, that difference matters more than any feature on either list.
Context length, concretely
Claude's 200K-token window means a whole document set goes in at once. On ChatGPT Plus you will split long inputs. For summarising a meeting archive or reasoning over a full codebase, this is the difference between one prompt and a workflow.

Only when reasoning models are part of your daily work and you are hitting limits. Start at $20 and upgrade when the ceiling becomes obvious.
Which one first, if I can only have one?
ChatGPT Plus, for the breadth, unless your work is predominantly code or long documents — in which case Claude Pro, without hesitation.
