What it is good for
- Teams building visual inspection or detection systems
- Labelling and training without assembling a toolchain
- Deploying vision models to edge devices
- Prototyping a vision use case before committing engineering
Strengths and trade-offs
Strengths
- Covers the whole lifecycle rather than one step
- Free tier is enough to evaluate on real images
- Large community and public dataset library
Trade-offs
- Credit-based pricing makes heavy training expensive quickly
- Vision-only — no overlap with language work
- Production deployment still requires engineering
Editors' review
The labelling is still the work
Model training is largely solved; getting a few thousand correctly labelled images of your specific defect is not. Roboflow makes that step manageable rather than making it disappear.
Budget time for labelling, not just credits. It is the part that determines whether the model works.
Verdict
The sensible default for a first computer vision project. Plan the labelling honestly.
