PLaMo
4.2
PLaMo is Preferred Networks' Japanese foundation model, offered mainly through licensing rather than a public API tier. PFN develops across four layers in-house — AI semiconductors, compute, foundation models and applications — and applies them in manufacturing, life sciences, finance and education. Recent releases add web search and deep research capability.

Editors' review
A licensing conversation, not a product trial
If you can use an API, the frontier models are easier and usually better. The reason to look at PLaMo is that you cannot — because of data residency, procurement policy or an air-gapped environment.
That narrows the audience considerably, and it means the evaluation is a contract negotiation rather than a weekend experiment.
Verdict
Relevant when deployment constraints rule out API access. Otherwise not in the decision set.
