Pinecone

4.5

Pinecone is the managed vector database most RAG stacks reach for first. The serverless model means you do not size an index in advance, and embedding and reranking are offered alongside storage, so a retrieval pipeline can be assembled without additional vendors.

What it is good for

  • RAG over a corpus that grows unpredictably
  • Teams who do not want to operate a search cluster
  • Workloads needing filtered vector search at scale
  • Organisations that need SOC 2 for procurement

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Serverless: no capacity planning before you have data
  • Embedding and reranking available in the same service
  • Mature filtering and namespace support
  • SOC 2 and enterprise contracting

Trade-offs

  • Vendor-hosted only — no self-hosting option
  • Costs grow with both storage and query volume
  • Migrating out means re-embedding or exporting vectors in bulk

Editors' review

The default managed vector database, and the reason is operations

The hard part of vector search in production is not similarity, it is operations: sizing, sharding, re-indexing and keeping latency stable while the corpus grows. Pinecone sells exactly that, and the serverless model means the first decision is not a capacity estimate.

Having embedding and reranking in the same place matters more than it sounds. Reranking is usually the single largest quality improvement available to a RAG system, and not needing another vendor for it shortens the path.

The trade is lock-in and cost shape. There is no self-hosted option, so data residency requirements rule it out, and both storage and queries meter. Know what the corpus will look like in a year before committing.

Verdict

The fastest route to production RAG when self-hosting is not a requirement.
