- Parsing complex documents with tables and layout
- Building retrieval pipelines on the open-source framework
- Extraction into structured schemas
- Teams already using LlamaIndex who want managed parsing
Strengths and trade-offs
Strengths
- Open-source framework and commercial parsing from the same project
- Handles tables and layout better than generic text extraction
- Free tier of 10,000 credits a month is usable
Trade-offs
- Credit consumption varies by document complexity, making forecasts harder
- The commercial product is separate from the open-source library
- Pro's jump to $500 is a large step
Editors' review
Tables are the test
Any parser handles a paragraph. The differentiator is a financial table spanning two pages with merged cells, and that is where generic extraction produces garbage that looks plausible.
Evaluate on documents containing the tables you actually care about, and check the numbers against the source by hand.
Verdict
Strong for table-heavy documents. Verify the extraction manually before trusting it downstream.
