Gong

4.5

Gong records and analyses sales calls and feeds that into pipeline and forecasting. The AI is not the headline feature so much as the mechanism — it makes conversations searchable and comparable across a team, which is what turns anecdote into a view of the pipeline.

What it is good for

  • Sales organisations large enough that managers cannot listen to every call
  • Finding what distinguishes the deals that close
  • Onboarding new sellers against real recorded calls
  • Forecasting grounded in conversations rather than optimism

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Makes every call searchable and comparable
  • Forecasting grounded in what was actually said
  • Onboarding material drawn from real calls
  • Mature enterprise deployment

Trade-offs

  • Expensive: per seat plus a platform fee
  • Recording sales calls has consent requirements by jurisdiction
  • Sellers resist it unless the framing is coaching rather than surveillance

Editors' review

Turns sales calls into something you can actually examine

Without recording, a sales manager's picture of the pipeline is assembled from summaries by the people who are optimistic about it. Gong's value is that calls become examinable — what objections recur, what the deals that closed had in common.

The onboarding use is underrated. A new seller listening to real calls that went well learns faster than any amount of training material.

Two conditions. Recording calls carries consent obligations that vary by jurisdiction, and must be handled. And adoption depends entirely on whether sellers experience it as coaching or as surveillance — that is a management decision, not a product feature.

Verdict

Strong for sales organisations with scale. Settle consent and framing before rollout.
