Baseten

4.4

Baseten runs inference for your own and open-source models in production, with the operational parts — autoscaling, versioning, observability — handled. Its pricing does not charge for idle time, which suits traffic that varies through the day.

What it is good for

  • Serving a fine-tuned model without building infrastructure
  • Production inference with uneven traffic
  • Teams that need versioning and rollback for models
  • Moving off a prototype hosted somewhere unsuitable

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Autoscaling with no charge for idle capacity
  • Model versioning and rollback as first-class operations
  • Handles both custom and open-source models
  • Observability built in rather than added

Trade-offs

  • Priced above raw GPU rental at steady high load
  • Another vendor in the critical path
  • Cold starts on infrequently used models

Editors' review

Production inference without the production engineering

Getting a model to respond is a weekend. Keeping it responding — autoscaling, versioning, knowing when it degraded — is the part that needs an engineer permanently. Baseten sells that part, which is usually the reason custom models never leave the prototype.

Not charging for idle matters for real traffic shapes. Inference load follows working hours, and paying for a reserved GPU overnight is most of the bill.

At steady high utilisation, raw GPU rental wins on price. The question is whether the difference is larger than the engineer you would need to run it.

Verdict

The right call when you have a model and no infrastructure team. Revisit at sustained high volume.
