GitHub Copilot vs Codeium — paid standard against the free option

Most free-versus-paid comparisons in this category are unfair to the free option. This one is not: Codeium's free tier is usable for real work, and the case for paying is about team deployment rather than individual capability.

For an individual

Codeium free covers completion across more than 70 IDEs with no time limit. For a developer who wants AI completion and nothing more, there is no strong reason to pay $10 for Copilot instead. Try Codeium first and upgrade only when you hit something it cannot do.

If your work already runs through GitHub — issues, pull requests, actions — Copilot's integration is the thing you are paying for, and it is worth the difference. If it does not, Codeium Enterprise covers the same governance ground with broader editor support and a self-hosting option.

Capability

Single-line and short-block completion is close between them. Neither handles coordinated multi-file edits as well as Cursor or Claude Code, so if that is the requirement, this comparison is not the one to be having.

Is Codeium free forever for individuals?

That has been the positioning, and the free tier has stayed generous. As with any free tier, do not build a team process on the assumption that it never changes.

Which for a company that cannot use cloud AI?

Codeium Enterprise or Tabnine. Copilot requires GitHub Enterprise Server for anything self-hosted, which is a larger commitment.
