AI in finance operations — removing the work before the judgement
Anomaly detection is the highest-return application and the simplest to build.

Applicable steps
| Step | AI does | Person decides |
|---|---|---|
| Journal entries | Suggests from history | Whether to accept |
| Document capture | Extracts amount, date, counterparty | Whether it is appropriate |
| Anomaly detection | Flags unusual amounts or frequency | Whether it is actually wrong |
| Payment matching | Reconciles order to invoice | How to treat the difference |
| Monthly review | Points out period-on-period moves | Why they happened |
Why anomaly detection wins
When a person reviews everything, nothing stands out; at volume the one wrong item is buried. Simply flagging "unlike the others" narrows what gets looked at. The criteria can be crude — amount outside historical range, first-time counterparty, unusual frequency. No sophisticated model is needed.
Never automate
- Executing payments
- Finalising entries
- Tax determinations
- Approvals
Records for the audit
The trail should show that AI proposed and a person approved: who, when, and whether the proposal was accepted or amended. Without it you cannot answer what control was operating. Decide the record format at implementation.
Measure the close, not the hours
Five working days becoming three is a decision-speed result. Measured only as hours saved, the benefit looks smaller than it is.
FAQ
Worth it for a small finance team?
Volume-dependent. Below a few hundred entries a month, configuration and checking exceed the saving.
