GitHub Copilot Workspace vs Cursor — issue-driven or editor-driven?
Copilot Workspace starts where your work is tracked and ends at a pull request. Cursor starts where you type and makes that faster. Which fits depends on whether your process runs through issues or through the editor.

Two different entry points
| Copilot Workspace | Cursor | |
|---|---|---|
| Starts from | A GitHub issue | Your editor |
| Produces | A plan, then a pull request | Edits in your working tree |
| Best for | Well-specified, scoped tickets | Exploratory and continuous work |
| Requires GitHub | Yes, fundamentally | No |
| Review model | Pull request | Diff as you go |
When the issue-first model wins
When work genuinely arrives as well-specified tickets and the team's process already runs through pull requests. Starting from the issue means the context is already written down, and the output lands where reviews happen.
When the editor-first model wins
When the work is exploratory, when the specification emerges while you build, or when your repository is not on GitHub. Most day-to-day development is this, which is why Cursor has broader adoption.
They are not exclusive
Several teams use Workspace for mechanical tickets — dependency bumps, small fixes, migrations — and an editor-based tool for everything else. The two do not compete for the same work.
Do we need GitHub Enterprise for Workspace?
It is tied to the GitHub platform; availability depends on your plan and may change. Check current terms before building a process on it.
Which produces better code?
Comparable, for work that suits each one. The difference is where it starts and how it lands, not the quality of the generation.
