Adobe Firefly vs Midjourney — which is safer for client work?
For personal work this comparison does not matter. For anything a client pays for, the question of what the model was trained on and who carries the risk is the comparison, and image quality is secondary.

The core difference
Adobe trained Firefly on licensed material, principally Adobe Stock, and built its commercial positioning around that. Midjourney's training data is not disclosed in comparable detail. If a client's legal team asks what the model learned from, only one of those has an answer that ends the conversation.
Side by side
| Adobe Firefly | Midjourney | |
|---|---|---|
| Training data | Licensed material, disclosed | Not disclosed in detail |
| Commercial use | Positioned for it explicitly | Permitted on Standard and above |
| Integration | Photoshop, Illustrator, Express | Discord and web |
| Image quality | Good | Class leading for artistic work |
| API | Yes | No official API |
| Best for | Client and brand work | Concept, mood and visual exploration |
What to do in practice
- Exploration and mood boards — Midjourney, because quality matters and nothing ships
- Anything delivered to a client — Firefly, because the licensing question is answerable
- Brand assets and anything involving a real person or place — Firefly, without exception
- Automated generation in a product — Firefly or another API-capable model
What neither solves
Prompting for a specific artist's style, or generating something that closely resembles an existing work, is a problem regardless of which tool produced it. The training data question is about the model; this one is about what you asked it for.
Does indemnification make it safe?
It transfers some risk, within limits and conditions that are worth reading carefully. It is better than nothing and it is not the same as the output being unproblematic.
What about Japanese clients specifically?
Expect the training data question to come up in writing, and expect the answer to need to be in a document rather than a conversation. Firefly is considerably easier to clear on that basis.
